The US Department of Energy has opened a lab call worth up to $41 million to help move technologies from national laboratories toward commercial use. The opportunity covers five energy and infrastructure areas and invites outside organisations to signal interest in partnering with eligible laboratories.
What is the funding call?
The opportunity sits within the Technology Commercialization Fund’s Core Laboratory Infrastructure for Market Readiness programme, commonly shortened to TCF CLIMR. It is designed to connect federally funded research with industry expertise, manufacturing capability, investment and market knowledge.
Which technologies are in scope?
The five participating areas are critical minerals and energy innovation; cybersecurity, energy security and emergency response; hydrocarbons and geothermal energy; electricity; and nuclear energy. Detailed topics, cost-share rules and submission requirements are contained in the full lab call.
Who can submit a proposal?
DOE national laboratories, plants and sites are the applicants. Companies, investors, universities, non-profits and other organisations cannot simply apply as laboratories, but they can place their details on the official Teaming Partner List so eligible applicants can identify potential collaborators.
Is the full $41 million guaranteed?
No. DOE describes the amount as “up to” $41 million. The final total depends on the 2026 budget and future congressional appropriations for 2027. A call for proposals is also not an award to any named project. National-laboratory concept papers are due at 3pm Eastern Time on 3 November 2026.
What should prospective partners do?
Interested organisations should read the official call, confirm whether their capabilities fit a listed topic and use the Teaming Partner List where appropriate. Commercialisation programmes can support testing and partnerships, but selection does not by itself guarantee market adoption or commercial returns.
