This notice explains how Ferdiox handles personal information when you visit the website or contact us. Ferdiox is operated by Astronomica Ltd, which is the controller for the personal information described here. Further company information is available at Astronomica.uk.
Information we receive
Most people can read Ferdiox without creating an account or giving us their name. Like almost every website, our server and service providers receive technical information when a page is requested. This can include an IP address, date and time, requested URL, referring page, browser and device information, language, country or approximate location, and diagnostic or security data.
We use Jetpack Stats to understand broad patterns such as page views, referring sites and country. Jetpack may process visitor IP addresses, user-agent data, visited and referring URLs, timestamps, browser language, country code and, if a visitor is logged in to WordPress.com, related WordPress.com identifiers. Jetpack states that identifiable Stats logs are retained by Automattic for 28 days and are not shown to site owners as individual visitor records. See Jetpack’s Stats privacy information.
Google Search Console gives us information about how the site appears in Google Search, such as search terms, impressions, clicks, indexing and technical errors. This information does not normally identify an individual visitor to us.
If you email us, submit material, leave a comment or use another feature that asks for information, we receive the information you choose to provide. This may include your name, contact details, organisation, message, attachments and related correspondence. Contributors and account holders may provide additional information under a separate contributor, employment or service agreement.
Why we use information
- To deliver pages, maintain the website and diagnose faults.
- To protect the site, our users and our legal rights; detect abuse; and maintain records of incidents.
- To understand readership in aggregate and improve coverage and site performance.
- To answer messages, assess submissions and manage editorial relationships.
- To publish journalism and exercise freedom of expression and information where lawful.
- To comply with legal obligations and establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
Lawful bases
Depending on the activity, we rely on legitimate interests in operating, securing, improving and publishing a news service; performance of a contract or steps requested before a contract for contributors and service providers; legal obligation; and consent where we specifically ask for it. Our legitimate interests are balanced against the rights and reasonable expectations of affected people. Journalism-related exemptions may apply to particular editorial processing where the law provides for them.
Cookies and similar technologies
WordPress, Jetpack and connected services may use cookies, pixels or similar technologies for essential operation, security, preferences and measurement. The exact technologies depend on the features active at the time. Browser controls can restrict cookies, although parts of the site may then work differently. Where consent is legally required for a non-essential technology, we aim to request it through the available consent controls.
Sharing and processors
Information may be processed by suppliers that provide hosting, content delivery, security, analytics, email, search-performance and technical support. These may include Automattic for Jetpack and Google for Search Console. We may also disclose information where reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect rights or safety, investigate misuse, obtain professional advice, or manage a business reorganisation. We do not sell a database of named Ferdiox readers.
Some suppliers may process information outside the UK. Where data-protection law requires safeguards, we seek to rely on an applicable adequacy regulation, approved contractual protections or another lawful transfer mechanism.
Retention
We keep information only for as long as reasonably needed for the purpose, security, editorial record, dispute handling and legal obligations. Retention therefore varies. Server and security logs are retained according to operational need and provider settings; correspondence is kept while relevant to the enquiry or relationship; and contributor records follow the relevant agreement and legal requirements. Published journalism and its supporting editorial records may be retained for archival and public-interest purposes.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may have rights to ask for access, correction, erasure, restriction or portability of personal information, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. These rights are not absolute and may be limited by exemptions, including those relating to journalism, freedom of expression, legal claims and the rights of others.
You have a right to object to processing based on legitimate interests. Tell us what processing concerns you and why. You also have an absolute right to object to direct marketing.

Security and automated decisions
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures appropriate to the information we handle. No internet service can promise perfect security. Ferdiox does not use visitor information to make solely automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on individuals.
